About the Doctors

Drs. Sonnenberg, Lapena and Planz are specialists in pediatric dentistry. Dr. Arvay is an orthodontic specialist. Each doctor strives to serve the residents of Flanders, NJ with the highest level of oral care available.

Edward M. Sonnenberg, DDS

Pediatric Dentistry
Dr. Sonnenberg received his D.D.S. degree from Columbia University School of Dentistry in 1972 and completed an internship in Dentistry at Connecticut Valley Hospital in 1973. In 1975 he received a Certificate in Pediatric Dentistry from the University of Connecticut Hospital. Since 1975, Dr. Sonnenberg has taught at UMDNJ and the Columbia University School of Dental and Oral Surgery. He is also an attending dentist at Morristown Memorial Hospital. Dr. Sonnenberg is a fellow of the Academy of Dentistry for the Handicapped.

Dr. Sonnenberg was named top Pediatric Dentist in New Jersey in the New Jersey Monthly Magazine. He has contributed articles and chapters for many publications and textbooks. He is a member of the American Dental Association, New Jersey Dental Association, American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and the Academy of Dentistry for the Handicapped. Dr. Sonnenberg serves on the Board of Directors of the New Jersey Association of Dentistry for Patients with Disabilities.

Bernadette A. Lapena, DDS

Pediatric Dentistry
Dr. Lapena received her D.D.S. degree from the New York University College of Dentistry in 1997. She possesses advanced educational certificates in Pediatric Dentistry from the Lutheran Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY, Brookdale University Hospital & Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY and the New York University College of Dentistry. She is currently an instructor at the New York University College of Dentistry.

Dr. Lapena was a member of the Dean's List at West Virginia University, where she received her undergraduate degree in Chemistry and was named the Outstanding First Year Resident in Pediatric Dentistry at the Brookdale University Hospital & Medical Center.

Amy Planz, DDS

Pediatric Dentistry
Dr. Amy Planz, “Dr. Amy”, is a graduate of the University of Maryland School of Dentistry, Baltimore, MD, graduating in 2002 with a Doctor of Dental Surgery, D.D.S., degree.

Dr. Planz completed a General Practice Residency program in 2003 at the Malcolm Randall VA Medical Center, Gainesville, FL, and a Pediatric Dental Residency program at the Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY, where she served as chief resident.

Dr. Planz is a member of many professional associations including the American Dental Association and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. She is licensed in New Jersey and New York.

Joseph M. Arvay, DMD

Orthodontics for Children and Adults
Dr. Joseph Arvay is a board certified orthodontist with offices in Morristown and Flanders. He graduated with honors from Seton Hall University and received a master's degree from the National University of Ireland. He received his D.M.D. degree and certificate in orthodontics from the New Jersey Dental School at UMDNJ, where he was inducted into the Omicron Kappa Upsilon honor society. He also received a post-doctorate fellowship from Harvard University.

He has been an attending orthodontist on the dental staff of Morristown Memorial Hospital for over 10 years and has appeared on local TV to describe some of the recent advances in orthodontic treatment. He has lectured on adult orthodontic treatment to the dental staff at Overlook and Morristown hospitals.

Dr. Arvay was named as one of the Top 10 orthodontists in the New Jersey Monthly Magazine's dentist poll. He has had articles published in the American Dental Association Journal and the Clinical Preventive Dentistry.

Dr. Arvay is an appointed member of the New Jersey Dental Association Peer Review Committee for orthodontics and is also a past president of the Tri-County Dental Society.
